Who We Are
Mission: To work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is the only international wildlife refuge in North America, located along the lower Detroit River and western Lake Erie just south of Detroit. Established in 2001 through a U.S.–Canadian collaboration, the refuge protects over 6,200 acres of diverse coastal wetlands, marshes, and upland habitats critical to migratory birds, native fish, and other wildlife. Recognized for its ecological importance, Humbug Marsh within the refuge is designated a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. Guided by the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act, we work with local, regional, and international partners to preserve and restore vital ecosystems in one of the world’s most industrialized regions.
What We Do
At the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, we actively manage and protect critical natural habitats through:
- Habitat Conservation and Restoration – Managing over 30 refuge units with techniques like water level manipulation, prescribed fire, and habitat restoration to preserve biodiversity.
- Invasive Species Management – Controlling invasive plants and animals to maintain healthy native ecosystems, in partnership with local conservation groups.
- Scientific Research and Monitoring – Conducting biological surveys and supporting research projects to inform adaptive management strategies and protect wildlife populations.
- Public Education and Engagement – Fostering environmental stewardship through community programs, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative conservation initiatives.
- Law Enforcement and Protection – Working with federal, state, and local partners to enforce wildlife laws, protect sensitive areas, and ensure the refuge remains a safe space for wildlife and visitors alike.
Through our work, we are building a sustainable future for wildlife and people by protecting one of North America’s most vital and unique ecosystems.
