Who We Are
Mission: To protect our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.
Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We are a community-oriented, grassroots organization, and we are the largest member-based environmental nonprofit in Michigan. Clean Water Action was founded in 1972 when its founder used grassroots activism to help pass the Clean Water Act, which was an unprecedented piece of legislation that protected water all across the United States. We are a bipartisan organization that has won important victories for the people of Michigan for over 45 years.
What We Do
Michigan Clean Water Action fights to protect our waters, rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands in Michigan while also ensuring that every Michigander has access to clean, safe drinking water. We use grassroots organizing to educate communities on the issues we work on, as well as listening to their concerns. We also get average Michiganders to take action on our issues by writing letters to their lawmakers, sending comments to the EPA or DEQ, etc. We then use this people power that we have created to put pressure on legislators to pass legislation that protects our water and the health of our communities.
