United Way for Southeastern Michigan believes learning begins at birth and that every child is entitled to a nurturing environment and a high-quality education that prepares them for success. We convene schools, community members and business leaders to integrate work-based learning experiences and rigorous academics to put power behind students’ diplomas.
The Summer Career Connections Fair is a space for 750 youth and young adults to engage in:
- On-the-spot interviews for summer employment
- Workforce readiness
- Job training
- Skill building
- Career exploration experiences
- Networking opportunities
The Summer Career Connections Fair has three student tracks that volunteers will lead and support:
- Ready To Develop - (volunteers will engage with students at the career exploration area, then lead to Professional Communication and Networking breakout, then conduct mock interviews with the students)
- Ready To Explore and Plan - (volunteers will lead students to Personality and Interest Activities breakout, then engage students at the exploration area, then to Goal Setting Workshop)
- Ready To Graduate - (volunteers will lead students to Ready to Graduate breakout session area, then support workshop facilitators in engaging students in goal setting, applying to post-secondary options, and resume writing. Volunteers will then lead students to the exploration area and engage with them in exploring future careers.)
Volunteers will be assigned to one of the above tracks on the morning of the event on a first come, first serve basis. Volunteers should be comfortable engaging with youth ages 14-18 years old. There will be an orientation/training the morning of the event to help give you ideas and suggestions of ways you can engage with the students in your track.
Lunch will be provided to all volunteers.
